The
Victoria Salmon Kings took to
the ice in October of 2004! The
Salmon Kings roots began as a
dormant ECHL membership that
last resided in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana. The membership was
purchased by RG Properties in
2003 and the professional hockey
team kicked off their inaugural
season against the Condors in
Bakersfield, California.
The inaugural season came to an
end one game below .500, with a
record of 15-52-5.
The 2004-05 season was a
difficult one for the Salmon
Kings. The team found themselves
on the road for the first 14
games, at home for a couple
months, and then back out on the
road for 12 games to end the
year.
The
team moved from the Bear
Mountain Arena into the new 7000
seat Save-On-Foods Memorial
Centre for the 2005-06 campaign.
With a record of 14-23-1 in
mid-January 2006, the Salmon
Kings signed its second head
coach, Troy Ward—a veteran of
the NHL, ECHL, and NCAA. The
team finished its second season
with a record of 26-37-9, nearly
doubling its win column from the
previous year.
The Save-On-Foods Memorial
Centre welcomed over 150,000
guests to the Salmon Kings 36
home games, equal to an average
of 4230 fans per game. This
average helped to boost the ECHL
attendance average from the
previous year. Victoria
celebrated its final game of the
2005-06 season with a 7-5 win
over the Utah Grizzlies on April
8.
Ward decided not to return as
head coach, and the Salmon Kings
signed Tony MacAulay to a
two-year deal on June 8, 2006.
The Save-On-Foods Memorial
Centre will host the Victoria
Salmon Kings third professional
hockey season, beginning late
October 2006.
