Radiohead? Outkast? The Beatles?
It’s hard to remember the last
act—certainly, there’s been no
hip-hop performer—with as much
crossover appeal as the Black
Eyed Peas. The
L.A.-based quartet, which has
been around in one form or
another since the late ‘80s, hit
paydirt in 2003 with the song
“Where is the Love?” (#8 in the
Hot 100 in the U.S., six weeks
at #1 in the U.K. where it
became the number one single of
2003) with Justin Timberlake.
Elephunk, the group’s
breakthrough mix of hip-hop,
pop, rock, folk and funk, made
the band a household name all
over the world as the disc went
gold and platinum in the U.S.,
the U.K., Germany and other
European markets. The song
“Let’s Get it Started” was used
in an NBA commercial and earned
the group a Grammy.
Last year Black Eyed
Peas consolidated their
position as one of the biggest
groups in the world with the
phenomenally successful (five
times platinum) Monkey
Business. Guests like JT,
Sting, James Brown and Jack
Johnson added to the
revolutionary new hip-hop beat
the band continued to explore,
and the disc spawned more
massive singles. “Don’t Phunk
with My Heart” reached #3 on
Billboard’s Hot 100 and earned
the band another Grammy while
the infectious “My Humps” became
one of most inescapable tracks
of the year, and one which the
band performed at the 93rd Grey
Cup in Vancouver—a spectacle
that was, as it turns out, just
a warmup for what is sure to be
one of the biggest concerts of
2006.
While Sean Paul, Shaggy and
Elephant Man have proven the
commercial viability of the
modern Carribean sound, a
rhythmic female performer has
yet to emerge—that is, until
Rihanna. The Barbados-born
singer may only be 17, but
already she’s ripping
traditional reggae songs like a
seasoned dancehall queen. At
least, that’s what Shawn “Jay-Z”
Carter found upon her audition,
which resulted in a quick
signing. “Pon De Replay”, her
single from a hotly anticipated
debut album, is sure to smash up
dancehalls worldwide.
Don’t miss the Black
Eyed Peas live at the
Save-On Foods Memorial Centre on
Saturday, October 7th with very
special guests Rihanna
and Swollen Members.
